We are excited to announce that we have confirmed the date and location for the Club Presentation Night.

This year we are moving our presentation location to the beautiful facilities at the Blackburn Rovers’ Stadium. We have booked a room overlooking centre pitch and catered by the Northcote Manor group. The date is confirmed for May 11, from 7pm so pencil it into your diaries and confirm attendance and numbers with your managers.

We are pleased to be developing community links with the Rovers as we hope to plan further events with them, including fund- raising.

Furthering our links with the Blackburn (senior) Hawks, we are pleased to announce that this year we will hold our presentation awards with the Hawks!

This promises to be a fantastic event at reasonable prices. We have booked a photographer, a DJ and a children’s entertainer plus have lined up some outstanding raffle prizes. So come on out and get to know everyone in the Hawks’ community.
Everyone involved with the Junior and Senior Hawks are very welcome and we would like to extend a special invitation to development players.

Costs will be: £15/adult; £7.50/ child 17 and under; players free; leading managers and coaches free.

Junior Day Success

As part of the Blackburn (senior) Hawks’ commitment to supporting and developing junior players, the Hawks’ hosted a Junior Day on March 10th. The Day was conceived of primarily as a community awareness event. Hawks’ publicity officer Alan Amos worked tirelessly to publicise the event and to raise awareness of our programmes amongst young people in Blackburn with Darwen. Especially important for us, Alan visited schools and youth clubs to talk to young people about Junior Ice Hockey. We will be taking this work forward as we continue to develop our relationship with the council.
The event drew about 500 people to the match and we were really pleased with the level of support shown by junior players and families. Particular thanks go to the young helpers (especially Nathan Dove), mascots and announcers at the game (especially Abbie Rawcliffe), as well as the under-14 and under-12 players who participated in an on-ice demonstration between periods.
The arena was very supportive of the event, issuing free tickets to schools and youth organisations, and helping us with our preparations. Thanks go to the arena staff, the Wilding family who organised and printed our fantastic new roller banners and who provided ‘Jo the Ice Hockey player’—a mannequin wearing hockey kit to show to interested young people. Thanks also to Nathan Massey for updating our website to coincide with the day. We are grateful to all the parents who took time to put up posters advertising the Day in their area, this was a real Club effort!
Fundraising at the event included a bucket collection, which raised £114.60, the selling of Club merchandise and used kit (you will now see a lot of our young players wearing full used Hawks or Eagles kit for practice) which raised £72.00 and an extremely popular sweets table, which raised £87.60. In addition, four luxury gift baskets were raffled for Mother’s Day and raised £120.20.
Perhaps even more importantly, however, our information table drew a lot of interest, our players acting as very capable ‘Club Ambassadors’, and we signed up 23 young people interested in at- tending Taster Sessions. The success of the event, and the work put into publicising it, has also paid off in a significant rise in young people attending our development sessions on Monday evenings.

Junior Hawks Day – 10th March 2013

The Blackburn HAWKS are committed to support of the Club junior teams. The HAWKS believe it is important to help and develop the next generation of hockey players in our community in a variety of ways, from sharing player expertise during team practices, to inspiring young players and lending a hand in helping to raise funds to ensure that ice hockey continues within our community.

In support of junior teams, the Blackburn HAWKS are holding a Junior Day at our up coming home game on March 10th, 2013. Leading up to the game, HAWKS players and staff will be promoting the junior programme throughout local schools and youth organisations, helping to bring the sport to all within the community of Blackburn with Darwen.

On the day, junior team players from ages 6 to 17 will be rinkside to promote their teams to the general public. Volunteer representatives from the junior teams will be on hand to share their experience of ice hockey with interested young people from the community and their parents/carers. Young people will have the opportunity to try on kit, experience on-ice special events, and ask questions of junior players and representatives. Plus there will be the opportunity to win fantastic prizes from raffles and competitions at the game!

Young people will have the opportunity to sign up for a free ice hockey taster session, where children of all ages and skating abilities can come down to the arena for a fun and exciting chance to try ice hockey for themselves! The HAWKS Junior support programme and Junior Day are a real opportunity for fans and players to support the future of Blackburn Ice Hockey, so mark the date in your diary, and help make this a great event!

2 Day Hockey School in Blackburn – Only £95!

I am delighted to be able to announce that Hockey Skills for Life is running a 2 day hockey school in Blackburn on the 14th and 15th August following an incredibly successful 2 years at Telford Ice Rink.

Priced at only £95 the camp provides the amount of training most players will barely receive in a month! With a selection on the regions leading coaches and players involved with the camp all attendees will be provided with the individual tuition they require to release their full potential. Each day of the camp looks to develop players personal skills through specific on ice progression drills alongside a comprehensive off ice program.

Welcome to the Blackburn Junior Hawks website. You find us organising the teams and schedules for the 2011-2012 season. We run teams at all ages from our Under 10′s Merlins to our senior team the Lancashire Raptors. If you want to try out for any of the teams then come along to the Blackburn Ice Arena at 7pm – 8pm Monday nights where we run a session where you can learn skating skills and how to handle a hockey stick. Don’t worry about kit to get started, we have a room full of loan kit in all sizes, even skates.

On Saturday 15th January 2011 the u10′s Merlins made the trip down to the Lammas Leisure Centre to play our return match against Sutton Sting. This is a real test for our players with the Sutton home ice being a lot smaller than Blackburn and the home team enjoying a deserved run of results that have left them unbeaten at the top of our league.

The Blackburn team were forced to travel short handed with some players out due to injury and family commitments but we brought every available player to the ice.

From the first face off, it was clear that our training and coaching over Christmas and New Year had paid off with every line making Sutton work hard for the goals. Notable in our Line 1 was Helmut Klovans playing up from Line 2 and spending every shift getting into the thick of it assisting Nathan Dove in breaking up moves and clearing the lines whenever he could. Netminder Mattie Holden continued to show what a great shot stopper he is between the pipes with a string of point blank saves throughout the match. He will be missed next season when he moves up to the 12′s. Jacob Lutwyche had a massive game, taking the puck forward in the teeth of some physical marking that resulted in a couple of penalties on the Sting for tripping and a blatant shoulder charge. He didn’t mind the knocks because as he said afterwards, the concentration on him left the space open for our first goal of the season. MVP Alfie Jones made one of his typically strong breaks over the opposition blue line and the puck broke free to Rob Thomas who fired in from long range with a rocket shot that was only seen by the Sting netminder as it passed by on its way to the back of the net.

Line two scrapped hard for every shift with Daniel Horton and Alex Lutwyche busy in defence showing improved positional awareness whilst Helena Latwell Watts and two pickups from the Sting took the forward duties.

Line three continued to show ability to break from defence with Keiron Furlong and Keiran Lucas providing a constant threat that always seemed to be thwarted by the buzzer. Our smallest players Lucas Vince and Callum Preston stood up well against a much bigger Sutton Sting line and Chloe Strong covered every inch of ice to get in on the action

This is the first goal that we have scored this season and for it to come against a skilled and organised side like Sutton shows just how far the Merlins have progressed. This is a very young side that will continue to improve at u10′s level season by season. Many thanks to our coaches for all the work to date, also the parents and supporters but most of all to the players for keeping going, trying their best every shift and bringing a grin to the face of every parent behind the perspex.

Solihull Barons 10 Lancashire Raptors 3

Overall this was a good result for the Raptors (Solihull beat Flintshire 13 – 3 earlier in the season)- Solihull are an excellent team and should be in Division 1 –and almost certainly will be next season as they are top by a long way and it doesn’t look as if anyone will catch them.

Stevie Hetherington hat trick for the Raptors – two unassisted and one assisted by Kurtis Hall. The four U18s whom played (Tom Murphy, Matt Gibson, Michael Alexander and Chris Butcher) all got plenty of ice time and were a credit to the team – gave 100% all the way through and they took some heavy knocks from the much more experienced Solihull players. Tom Murphy’s main job was to mark Dean Tonks (he has dual registration to play for the EPL Hull Stingrays as well as Solihull) and he stuck to him like glue – as did Wes Nixon when he was on against Tonks. Janis Grinbergs and Kurtis Hall each received 2+2 for roughing (as did their opponents) showing spirit when the very physical Solihull players were not given it all their own way.

MVP went to Steve Hetherington.

The Lancashire Raptors next Home game is against Sheffield on Saturday January 22nd.

u10′s Player Cards – Batch #1

Well, this is the first batch of player cards for the 2010 u10′s Merlins. I haven’t got action shots of every player yet but by the end of the season, I aim to have a card for every squad player. If you want the picture changed or if you have a picture that you want me to use, just email it to me or post it up on the club Facebook page and I’ll get it done quickly.
